Feeding the Eyes (The Star)

The important role diet can play in preventing vision problems.

WE all know that carrots are good for sight. Our mums drummed that into us when we were growing up; we’re probably still drumming this fact to our kids or grandkids.
What exactly is in carrots or spinach that is good for our eyesight? What other foods are good for the eyes?

In 2009, a study published in Opthamology found that proper diet, especially a low glycaemic index diet, can be very helpful in preventing age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and other sight-robbing diseases. The nutrients that have been found to be most protective are lutein, zeaxanthin, beta carotene, vitamins C and E, zinc, and the omega-3 fatty acids DHA and EPA.
Some of the foods that are known to foster good eyesight and eye health include:
Spinach, kale and green leafy vegetables – These foods are rich in carotenoids, especially lutein and zeaxanthin. Lutein, a yellow pigment, protects the macula from the damaging effects of the sun’s ultraviolet rays. Lutein and zeaxanthin are the only two primary plant pigments contained within the macula and retina of the eye.
Eggs – Eggs are rich in sulphur, cysteine, lecithin, amino acids and lutein. Sulphur-containing compounds protect the lens of the eye from cataract formation. Sulphur is also necessary for the production of glutathione, an important antioxidant for the lens of the eye and the whole body.
Cold water fish (sardines, cod, mackerel, tuna) – These are excellent sources of DHA, a compound which provides structural support to cell membranes and is recommended for dry eyes. DHA is also used as a treatment for macular degeneration and for sight preservation.
Carrots – Carrots are rich in beta carotene. Beta carotene is a provitamin A carotenoid that is converted to retinol (vitamin A) by the body after the food is ingested. Vitamin A is an antioxidant that protects the eyes from free radicals and also helps the surface of the eye, mucous membranes and skin be effective barriers to bacteria and viruses, reducing the risk of eye infections, respiratory problems and other infectious diseases.
Blueberries, blackberries, bilberries – These are high in flavonoids and contain anthocyanins, which help improve night vision.
Nuts – They are excellent sources of vitamin E and minerals such as zinc that help keep your eyes healthy and may decrease your risk of cataracts and age-related macular degeneration.
Presbyopia and cataract
The lens is also subject to the ageing process, and the resulting conditions – cataracts and presbyopia – will eventually affect just about everyone. When we are born, our lenses are crystal clear, meaning that the image entering the eye is not degraded by any opacity. They are also very pliable, meaning that the lens can change its shape to help focus images that are very far away as well as very close.
Unfortunately, as we grow older, two things happen to the lens: it clouds up and it becomes less pliable. The clouding of the lens – or cataract – forces an image to travel through a distorted medium, resulting in diminished vision.
Cataracts are the leading cause of impaired vision and blindness worldwide, affecting up to 40% of people over 75.
They are most often caused by overexposure to intense light (sunlight) but other factors can contribute to them: cigarette smoking, hereditary factors, injury, diabetes, and some medications.
Cataracts usually develop slowly, starting with blurred vision, spots, and the impression that a film is covering the eyes.
Similarly, when the lens loses its pliability, it also loses its ability to focus over a wide range of distances. A hardened lens becomes more fixed on distant objects and cannot focus as well on nearby objects or vice versa. This hardening often occurs in middle age, when people notice the need to hold the newspaper farther away in order to read the print – presbyopia.
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD)
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a disease affecting the elderly that gradually destroys the macula, resulting in loss of sharp, central vision. The retina is the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye. The centre of this retina is called the macula. It is the macula that is responsible for the sharp central vision needed for activities like reading, writing, driving and even recognising faces. It enables us to see fine detail and differentiate colour.
Macular degeneration causes no pain. Macular degeneration affects one-third of adults over the age of 75, and is the principal cause of visual disability in people over 65 years of age.
Age is by far the greatest risk factor.
Lutein and zeaxanthin declines with age
Like many other important nutrients, lutein and zeaxanthin are not manufactured in the body. The only way to consume it is by eating food rich in these antioxidants or by supplementing with lutein and zeaxanthin.
Unfortunately, as we age, the concentration of lutein and zeaxanthin in the eyes decline. Increasing one’s dietary intake of lutein and zeaxanthin increases the density in the macula.
Lutein and zeaxanthin belong to the xanthophyll family of carotenoids and are the two major components of the macular pigment of the retina. The macula lutea or “yellow spot” in the retina is responsible for central vision and visual acuity.
Of the more than 600 plant pigments called carotenoids found in nature, lutein and zeaxanthin are the only carotenoids found in the macula, retina and lens of the human eye, and have dual functions in these tissues – to act as powerful antioxidants and to filter high-energy blue light.
Lutein and zeaxanthin offer protection against the two most common causes of vision loss: cataracts and age-related macular degeneration (AMD). In addition to its role in preventing cataracts, lutein and zeaxanthin may improve vision in people who already have cataracts.
Lutein is found in high amounts in human serum. In the diet, it is found in highest concentrations in dark green, leafy vegetables (spinach, kale, collard greens, and others), corn, and egg yolks. Zeaxanthin is the major carotenoid found in corn, orange peppers, oranges, and tangerines.
Zeaxanthin is the dominant component in the centre of the macula, while lutein dominates at the outer edges. The eye is selective and preferentially places dietary zeaxanthin in the very centre of the macula, the most critical area for central vision with the greatest need for protection.
Concentrated in the lenses and retina, these two carotenoids fulfil two essential functions:
·Protect the eyes from damaging UV light by acting as a filter to shield against harmful blue light.
·Act as antioxidants to protect the lenses, retina and macula against free radical damage due to exposure to sunrays, computer screens and other harmful form of lights.
Both lutein and zeaxanthin absorb the very high-energy and most damaging portions of the light spectrum (ultraviolet blue). The absorption of the high-energy light spectrum is critical for the protection of the lens, retina and macula portions of the eye. High-energy blue light also generates “free radicals” that cause damage to the tissues of the eye.

Age related macular degeneration (ARMD)

Published in the October 2001 issue of "Archives of Ophthalmology", this study was a randomized clinical trial sponsored by the National Eye Institute, one of the National Institutes of Health.  In this study, the researchers found that antioxidants and zinc significantly reduce the risk of advanced age-related macular degeneration by about 25%.  The risk of vision loss due to advanced AMD was reduced by about 19%. This research suggests that antioxidants and zinc may help people at high risk for developing advanced AMD keep their vision. 

What you need to know:

• Age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a disease that dramatically increases in frequency after age 60, is the leading cause of visual impairment and blindness in the United States.  Most people with AMD have a dry form of the disease, for which there is no standard treatment.
• This is not the first study to suggest that antioxidants and zinc may be effective in the prevention and treatment of AMD.
• Nutritional supplements address the underlying pathology of AMD, i.e. free radical damage and poor oxygen flow to the macula in the eye.
• Although this study found the most benefit in people with advanced AMD, in practice, people with early AMD have benefited from the use of antioxidants and zinc.
• The combination used in this study contained vitamin C (500mg), vitamin E (400IU), beta-carotene (15mg, or 25,000 IU), zinc (80mg zinc oxide), and copper (2mg cupric oxide).
• Total vitamin and mineral intake from food, daily multivitamins and supplements should be reviewed with a health care practitioner to determine an individual's requirement for antioxidants and zinc.
• Mixed carotenoids may have a greater antioxidant effect than beta-carotene alone. Beta-carotene is only one type of carotenoid.  While beta-carotene generates vitamin A efficiently, other carotenes such as alpha-carotene and lycopene are more effective antioxidants.
• Zinc should not be given in high doses without copper.  High levels of zinc alone can cause a copper deficiency.  Copper deficiency is associated with poor collagen integrity and increased LDL and total cholesterol. 
• People taking blood-thinning prescription medications, ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba), or garlic should consult a health care practitioner before taking vitamin E.
• A diet rich in fruits and vegetables is associated with a lower risk for AMD, particularly green leafy vegetables, yellow-orange vegetables, and blueberries.  Fried and grilled foods should be avoided.  
• Bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus), ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba), and grape seed (Vitis vinifera) have excellent antioxidant ability.  Bilberry has a strong affinity for the retinal pigmented epithelium of the eye, the area that is affected by AMD.  Many natural health practitioners include these bilberry in the treatment of AMD.

鍾玉清出身香港，年輕時到台灣打拼，後來成為大西洋飲料公司(蘋果西打)老闆娘。鍾玉清原本有條件輕鬆享福、悠哉過日。不過，在長昕的所有經營團隊與夥伴看來，這位大富婆卻是無比的勤奮，也因為勤奮，故而能夠成為長昕公司的常青樹。

勤奮無比的大富婆鍾玉清
當她遇上長昕，愛上長昕主力產品攜鈣素之後，即下定決心把鈣質對人體的重要性，以及長昕產品如何幫助人們吸收運用鈣質進行一番徹底的研究。大約三個月的時間，鍾玉清就成為了鈣與攜鈣素的專家，每次出門，隨身攜帶一本自己整理的、超過一百頁的專業手冊。
鍾玉清的勤奮不只台灣夥伴都佩服，連馬來西亞市場的夥伴也不得不真心跟隨。因此，長昕在馬來西亞第一年的一億五千萬(台幣)業績，大約有四成是鍾玉清所創造出來的。
長昕亞洲區總經理黃敬英說，鍾玉清一個人拖著行李箱飛往馬來西亞，在街上進行陌生開發，也積極參加吉隆坡的教會活動，從零開始，就這樣一個人慢慢在陌生環境中找消費者，發現經營者，進而建構出來一個全新的組織。
鍾玉清的兒子現在在美國投資太陽能面板的研發生產上面，也算是一位明星產業的投資者，可是，鍾玉清卻選擇了直銷事業，而且為了打拼直銷事業，一個人獨自居住在台灣、獨自到馬來西亞開市場，其奮鬥的精神永遠也沒有懈怠過，比起精力充沛的年輕人，其拼勁更可謂有過之而無不及。
鍾玉清可以說是台灣精神的完美結合體現，這樣的精神，足可以給年輕世代一個重要的啟發。

堅持到底的林芝禾

鍾玉清如果是長昕公司的北霸天，那麼林芝禾則稱得上是長昕公司的南霸天了。
與鍾玉清不同，林芝禾是一個出身平凡的高雄人，而從林芝禾身上，則最能夠看出台灣人堅持不輟的價值。
2000年，林芝禾加入長昕，有機會親睹了公司的快速成長，創立短短一年之間，長昕公司的業績已經飆到每個月一千萬的營業額。可是，好景不常，由於外訓策略的錯誤，林芝禾又目睹了公司的崩盤，短短幾個月，長昕公司又從一個月一千萬的營業額，崩潰到一個月連一百萬都做不到。
很多大領袖在這時候都選擇離開，不過，林芝禾卻留了下來，他一步一腳印的慢慢熬，到了第三年終於把組織建構起來，也終於跟著公司一起走入收割的順境。
到了2004年，他的堅持有了豐厚回報，穩定的收入讓他能夠如願以償的住進千萬豪宅，因此，林芝禾特別喜歡在分享公司產品之外，也分享堅持的重要性，如果當年公司崩盤他也跟著許多人人一樣落荒而逃，林芝禾就不可能擁有目前每個月近百萬的收入，而在長昕如果不能堅持，到很多地方也可能一樣不能堅持，結果，就很可能淪入一種一家泅過一家的流浪命運。
堅持需要一些眼光，也需要一些信仰，更需要一些忍受煎熬的耐力，而這也是台灣人極為重要的價值之一。

讓苦行僧也自嘆弗如的劉勝如

劉勝如早在長昕公司還沒創立之前，就體驗到了攜鈣素的特質，因此一直跟著產品走，第一家代理攜鈣素的公司，雖然沒有把攜鈣素市場做起來，劉勝如依舊對它情有獨鍾，並在長昕接手攜鈣素之後，繼續經營長昕事業。
劉勝如是一位軍官退伍的退伍軍人，生活極為規律，從販售攜鈣素開始，劉勝如就是準時上午八點出門，晚上九點收工，至今，已經六十好幾了，他照樣把在台灣刻苦奮鬥的態度，帶到了馬來西亞新市場。
事實上，劉勝如可以說是長昕經銷商元老中的元老，許多下線現在都已經成為公司的皇冠。按照道理，他很早就可以只扮演一位領導人的角色，不過，他卻選擇一路走來始終如一，永遠做一個苦行僧，每天一早八點去出門拼事業，一直到晚上九點才束裝返回住處。
台灣雖然算是亞熱帶氣候，夏天也相當炎熱，不過比起馬來西亞的太陽，台灣的氣候還算溫和，而馬來西亞午後不定時的暴雨，也是另外一種氣候的挑戰，因此，劉勝如把台灣的苦行模式，帶到馬來西亞，更顯出台灣人刻苦精神的寶貴。劉勝如的刻苦精神，對於一向以休息為人生主要目標的馬來西亞人而言，特別具有一種深度的感動力量。
這些被劉勝如感動的馬來西亞人，也許一輩子也鍛鍊不出劉勝如這種能耐，可是，他們卻願意跟隨他，而一旦有人願意真心跟隨，很快的就會產生出色的新經營者，這些經營者並不一定要百分之百學劉勝如一樣苦行分享，但是，當他們也很努力的用自己的方法，去分享產品與事業、去發展組織的時候，劉勝如的組織也會越來越壯大，就像當年用苦行模式在台灣經營長昕事業一樣，很多下線比他自己更會做組織，有時候賺的錢也比他自己還多，但是，下線的傑出表現，連帶的也替他帶來了可觀的財富與榮耀。
劉勝如的苦行，可以說是台灣人刻苦耐勞價值的一種極致表現，一方面是不畏烈日與風雨；另一方面則是十幾年如一日，這樣的價值，大概拿到哪一個地方去都有可能成為第一吧。

用真誠贏得事業的歐巴桑劉金錢

劉金錢是一個非常平凡的澎湖人，年輕的時候在高雄落地生根，雖然沒讀什麼書，但是她自有一套認命的哲學，心甘情願的做一個幾乎是隱形於社會的家庭主婦。
問題是，就算她願意認命，命運卻不放過她，由於老公走的時候，給她留下了近千萬的債務，這位願意躲在家裡當隱形人的家庭主婦，被迫改變自己的隱形生活。不過，她所能夠做的，也只是替人家幫傭打掃、帶小孩。當然，這些卑微的工作，再怎麼努力，恐怕三輩子都還不了一千萬的債務，因此，當她遇見了直銷這個機會時，就很積極的把它看成是一個多出來的機會。
她很辛苦才籌到一筆可以購買產品入會的錢，也正因為籌的很辛苦，所以，她比一般人更加珍視這樣一個機會，很認真的進行分享；而且，至今她也只會分享，在很多人眼中，劉金錢是一個不折不扣的鄉下歐巴桑，她總是把組織講成「蜘蛛」。

Microcirculation Micro Tester

Capillaries are extremely small vessels located within the tissues of the body. They transport blood from the arteries to the veins.

Oxygen, carbon dioxide, nutrients, and wastes are exchanged through the thin walls of the capillaries.

Capillaries are so small that red blood cells can only travel through them in single file.

Capillaries are the smallest of a body's blood vessels and are parts of the microcirculation. They are only 1 cell thick. These microvessels, measuring 5-10 μm in diameter, connect arterioles and venules, and enable the exchange of water, oxygen, carbon dioxide, and many other nutrient and waste chemical substances between blood and surrounding tissues. During embryological development, new capillaries are formed by vasculogenesis, the process of blood vessel formation occurring by a de novo production of endothelial cells and their formation into vascular tubes. The term angiogenesis denotes the formation of new capillaries from pre-existing blood vessels.

Pathophysiology

Disorders of capillary formation as a developmental problem or acquired disorder are a feature in many common and serious disorders. Within a wide range of cellular factors and cytokines, problems with normal genetic expression and bioactivity of the vascular growth and permeability factor vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) appear to play a major role in many of these disorders. Cellular factors include reduced numbers and function of bone-marrow derived endothelial progenitor cells and reduced ability of those cells to form blood vessels.

• Formation of additional capillaries and larger blood vessels (angiogenesis) is a major mechanism by which a cancer may help to enhance its own growth. Disorders of retinal capillaries contribute to the pathogenesis of age-related macular degeneration.
• Reduced capillary density (capillary rarefaction) occurs in association with cardiovascular risk factors and in patients with coronary heart disease.

Calmodulin

Calcium ions play a crucial role in the metabolism and physiology of eukaryotes.  Calcium exists as a gradient across the plasma membrane, with extracellular concentrations being about 10,000 times higher than intracellular ones.  External signals, such as hormones, light, stress or pathogenesis, can often lead to transient increases in calcium concentrations within the cell.  Cells have developed a multitude of ways to control and make use of this ion gradient to regulate many cellular processes, ranging from transcription control and cell survival to neurotransmitter release and muscle function.  Calcium participates in an intracellular signalling system by acting as a diffusible second messenger to the initial stimuli.  Increased calcium concentrations lead to calcium binding by regulatory proteins, which turn the calcium signal into a biological response.  There are many such regulatory proteins that bind calcium, which together form an intricate network of feedback loops to control the location, amount and effect of calcium influx.  Calmodulin is one such calcium-binding protein that is considered a major transducer of calcium signals.

            Calmodulin (CaM) is a ubiquitous, calcium-binding protein that can bind to and regulate a multitude of different protein targets, thereby affecting many different cellular functions.  CaM mediates processes such as inflammation, metabolism, apoptosis, muscle contraction, intracellular movement, short-term and long-term memory, nerve growth and the immune response.  CaM is expressed in many cell types and can have different subcellular locations, including the cytoplasm, within organelles, or associated with the plasma or organelle membranes.  Many of the proteins that CaM binds are unable to bind calcium themselves, and as such use CaM as a calcium sensor and signal transducer.  CaM can also make use of the calcium stores in the endoplasmic reticulum, and the sarcoplasmic reticulum.  CaM undergoes a conformational change upon binding to calcium, which enables it to bind to specific proteins for a specific response.  CaM can bind up to four calcium ions, and can undergo post-translational modifications, such as phosphorylation, acetylation, methylation and proteolytic cleavage, each of which can potentially modulate its actions.

SNOW LOTUS 天山雪莲

A rare beauty of nature that grows in the highest peaks of the Himalayan mountains, the Snow Lotus has been prized for generations for its wondrous medicinal benefits. Found 5,000 m above sea level, this pure, white bloom miraculously retains its snowy colour despite growing so close to the sun. The secret to its magnificence lies in its high antioxidant properties. This gives the plant its remarkable natural ability to fight ageing, keeping its petals brilliantly white, soft and cottony even in its extreme surroundings.

Tianshan Snow lotus is a sexennial herbage and a rare medicinal herb, a special Xinjiang local plant growing only in the rocky mountains and glaciers near the snowline about 5000 meters above sea level. The snow lotus has the ability to resist severe cold, intense ultraviolet radiation and low oxygen --- in such an environment no other plants can grow. The snow lotus begins to blossom around the middle of August in the fifth year of it’s sexennial growth period. The stem, root, leaves and blossom of the snow lotus contain a variant composition of alkaloid, volatile oil, steroid, polysaccharide, reduced substance, manganese, zinc and some other trace elements. Some of the ailments where it has been proved to have medicinal value are Rheumatism, arthritis, lumbago and muscle soreness. It has also been shown to alleviate menorrhagia, functional irregular mentruation, impotence and weak physique. There are no known toxic side effects according to their research.

The harvesting of the snow lotus is regulated by the Chinese government and mostly by the military in view of the location of the plant. A certain number is allocated to research, some are sold to foreign researchers and to the public.
